Good Teacher, Bad Teacher
Bad Teacher The first video, a clip from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, is an example of bad teaching. The teacher is a monotone ‘sage on the stage’. His only attempt at student engagement is to have them inject words into his lecture, similar to ‘filling in blanks’ in a written paragraph on a test. The students are clearly disconnected and disengaged.
Good Teacher The second video, a clip from Mona Lisa Smile, is an example of good teaching. The teacher is facilitating rich discussion that supports critical thinking. She does not provide ‘answers’ for her students, rather she forces them to reflect and explore their own thinking. Through this she is focussed on the learning process, not ‘right answers’.
